Shyanne Brown 2nd hr Comp May 4 2016 ABC news The 2016 Mercury transit will occur between about 7:12 a.m. and 2:42 p.m. Mercury is the closet planet to the sun. It will begin to cross the suns path at 7:12 a.m. It will slowly move across the face of the sun and it will appear as a small black dot to people on Earth. This is if they are using a telescope or high powered binoculars with solar filters. The movement will take Mercury 7.5 hours with the planet leaving the suns rays at 2:42 p.m. according to NASA. NASA states that the last "trek" across the sun was in 2006. Space agencies expect the event will be visible to people in the eastern United States. Others who live in the West can see it after sunrise. So if you remember on May 9 look up at the sky and see if you can see little mercury passing across space in front of the sun.
